My first flight ever on Etihad. I see what you are saying, but they actually sold me an upgrade for less than what I bid for, so I don't see how that achieves anything for them. I was willing to pay more, they didn't take my money, and then sold me the same thing for less.
I wouldn't be surprised if the check-in upgrade price is just a fixed amount and not connected to the bid upgrade system in any way. But yeah, I agree if it's your first flight ever it doesn't seem optimal for them to not accept your bid upgrade. I've got nothing then.
