Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal
Introduction In cities without much competition I tend to be more lenient in my judgment of hotels. Based on my latest stay at Softitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal I found the hotel to be solid in its own right, and it’s even more attractive considering that large international hotel chains other than Accor have very little to offer. I stayed at Hilton in the past but it has since been downgraded to a DoubleTree and is not getting great reviews. There are two Sofitels in Luxembourg and the one where I stayed turned out to be a comfortable place to spend a few nights. Room I had never been able to find good use for Accor Diamond Suite Night awards until now because in my experience many hotels force guests to book high rates, making it uneconomical to use those suite upgrades. Sofitel Le Grand Ducal was not one of those hotels, I contacted them before booking and they were able to book me a room directly at the same price that I could see online and upgraded me automatically to a suite, which was a first for me. It set a positive tone for the upcoming stay.Based on the room descriptions on Accor’s website, I believe I was upgraded to a Prestige Suite rather than a Junior Suite because my city views were quite nice from the bathroom and the bedroom, including panoramic views with windows on two walls in the bedroom. Also from the Accor pictures, the layout of the Prestige Suite seemed to match the room I had. It was still somehow more a “junior” than a regular suite because the living / dining area was in the same room as the bed, however the overall area was bright and spacious. The bathroom was a bit odd because the toilet was on the left side upon entering the room, whereas the shower and bath were on the right of the entrance so the bathroom was effectively cut in two. Overall the room was in good condition, the only feature I did not like as much was the pattern of the carpet which made me feel a bit dizzy if I focused too much on it LOL. The bathroom amenities were Balmain – my wife loved the shower gel although the body lotion less so. Personally I thought it was ok but not in my top 10 brands of toiletries and I still prefer the regular L’Occitane found in other Sofitels but clearly opinions differ. The mini-bar had a few soft drinks available for free. Dining Unfortunately this Sofitel does not have a club millésime but because my stay included weekend nights I had free breakfast as Diamond. I found the breakfast to be of excellent quality and included fruits not often found in Europe such as passion fruits, I also loved the selection of nutty breads, and omelets with veggies were well presented. I was a bit worried about spending time in the restaurant during the covid omicron wave in Europe considering that our baby is unvaccinated but the restaurant was not crowded, plus they offered me to pick the food I wanted and they delivered it by tray to our room after our warm dish selection was ready which was quite a nice service on their behalf. I did not spend time at the bar but I went there to use my welcome drinks vouchers and take a couple of glasses of wine to the room. The bar looked great and would be a nice place for happy hour in non-covid times. For people who like cocktails, I would note that it was not possible to have cocktails with the welcome drinks unlike other upscale hotels such as some Fairmonts. Wifi Wifi was lightning fast with speeds of over 250 Mbps. Overall Overall I can easily recommend this hotel and given the lack of choices outside of Accor, it’s even more of a slam dunk that I would return with so few hotel chain alternatives. The value is even greater for Elites of ALL if using suite upgrades and having the Diamond weekend breakfast.
