I once had issues with the douaniers crossing in and out of France with a Swiss rental car. They started throwing obscure rules and regulations at me that I technically wasn't allowed to rent in Switzerland and cross into France. The whole thing was absurd, but I had been crossing back and forth through the same border post. My suggestion, if you're doing the same as me, is to vary the crossing points.
