How do I know for sure that I can cancel and get my miles back?

How close to the takeoff time can I cancel if her regular flight works out?
When you cancel an award the miles are always redeposited into the original account they came from, not the passenger (if different).

And all awards can be cancelled for a full refund, you just need to cancel before the scheduled departure time of the first flight. Not much else to it.
