Exactly. Which is why you should move to the next row if the one in front is occupied and saved. Bullying or shaming your way to split up a family is piss poor social behavior, particularly when saving is permitted by the airline and does not violate any social norms. If you require a specific seat fly an airline that reserves it for you

When you go to a school play, does your wife reserve a seat for you if you stop in the bathroom? Does that violate a social norm? The whole concept is laughable.
