We spent the past two nights at Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando. We were shown, but not given, a letter similar to the one
posted a few weeks ago in this thread, they said Premium Internet was covered and I'm pretty sure the spa discount was 30%.
We had a Deluxe room reserved, the check-in agent said they don't upgrade from that, but shortly after we checked in I got an email that said we were upgraded to a Club Room. I tried to get into the Club and was told that while we had a Club room, we don't get Club access.
The room we got was actually very good for this property, sixth floor overlooking the Beach Pool with views on to the park so we could see fireworks at the park and somewhere further away in the distance (SeaWorld maybe?) and had a decent size balcony. The room is otherwise pretty blah, nothing to write home about.
I checked my bill on the television the morning we were supposed to leave, none of the room charges we made were showing, only Premium Internet. I went to the front desk and asked about our various charges and she said the benefits would be applied, I asked to see what I would be charged and was given a folio with parking only and told everything else was covered. I said that didn't seem right, she assured me it was. Later in the morning I received a nearly incomprehensible bill that included over $200 in additional charges without any information on what had been removed. Charges I expected to be covered were on the bill, while charges I didn't expect to be covered were not anywhere on the bill (e.g., two checks with only alcohol at the Thirsty Fish).
A 16 ounce draft beer at the Thirsty Fish is $8, a 20 ounce glass of the same beer is $11, I didn't realize this at first.
The kids menu shows breakfast costs $7 at Trattoria del Porto, we were actually charged $9. The portion sizes for the kids' egg breakfast and pancakes (3 pancakes) were good, the kids' waffle was half a small waffle and in no way comparable to the portion size of the other kids' offerings. The breakfast was otherwise good though to give credit where credit is due.
I've been staying at this hotel for
over 20 years, it was a stunning hotel when it opened, but some of the room furnishings look like they may be original when it first opened, and it doesn't have the wow factor it did back then. Now it is a decent hotel with indifferent hotel staff (though the restaurant staff was generally good) that justifies what can be ultra-premium pricing only through the theme park benefits you receive (Unlimited Express Pass). If you're visiting Universal Orlando I would recommend the Hard Rock Hotel only because its location is much better, it is a short walk to the parks, though it's not worth paying more for compared to Portofino, we have only stayed at the Portofino recently because the pricing relative to Hard Rock was better.
Edited to add: So, after some back-and-forth about a bill higher than I expected and them not providing any detail on what was credited off, it appears they treat it as a $100 credit that can be used against multiple transactions, including alcohol. I wish I had known this because we had a more expensive dinner than we otherwise would have, my kids love the pizza at Sal's and we would have just done that both nights instead of making sure to spend $100 in dinner at Trattoria del Porto one night. Of course, YMMV, since the stated benefit is one dinner for $100. I still don't know for sure what was credited and what wasn't, but they promised an additional $68 credit for a breakfast and the total is less than I expected then, so I can only fight this for so long.
