Many people have Uber bills and Grubhub bills in the hundreds or thousands monthly; for them, Gold is now far better deal than the old travel credit. I am considering going back to the Gold after a year of Green+Platinum combo.

The fact is that the monthly Amex credits, while annoying/unusable for some, are much better for others. As always, YMMV.

EDIT - looking at it, the Amex Green now is the most expensive of the Amex charge cards as it has pretty worthless Clear and Loungebuddy benefits (the Clear benefit is now superceded by the Amex Platinum). In contrast, Amex Gold has a net $10 fee, and Amex Platinum for me is a negative ~$300 fee on a net basis for me at least
