I would prefer not to change the website to another country because I don't know how that could affect us. Also, the web support guy that is based in the UK told me that I would need to use a cc from that country.
Thank you for your help! I hope eventually AA will become aware of this problem. Maybe others will call when they try to reserve their flight.
The issue here is the point of sale. So the only way to solve is to change it!
(1) When I change the country to Spain / English on AA website I do see PE seats open on AA non-stop MIA-MAD and back for ca. 1.6k Euro (I searched May 2-26). If this is what you want, you can book it. These flights would be issued as AA tickets and you can use your upgrade instruments.
(2) Use an European website such as kayak.co.uk and search for PE for the dates you want. I found May 2-9 MIA-MAD-MIA for ca. 1.1k British pounds for direct AA flights but issued as BA tickets. No way to use SWUs.
By the way, I did see some of this before when AA was forcing you to fly partners for some international roundtrips.
