From my reading I believe I should be able to get my bags ticketed through so I don't have to exit security at HNL. Is this correct? I will get free bags on United, but should I expect to pay for the HNL-LIH leg?
Hawaiian is not Star Alliance, so your success will vary with agent, unless you get HNL-LIH ticket from UA. If agent checks through, no charge. UApolicy is not to check through though. HA will charge for bags at LIH check in and does not recognize UA status. They will not check through to mainland.

At certain times of day, HA bag check and new TSA set up can be horrendous. If UA doesn’t check through, 90 minutes could end up being close. UA’s bag return is slow in HNL and Hawaiian is at other end of terminal complex.
