Going from NA to India for example.. you would need to fly through europe or east asia (unless you get one of the coveted... near impossible UA (I) awards from EWR (easier to probably get Swiss 1st class...)

Yep, the award will be based as Nth America to India, doesn’t matter which way you go.
So you screenshot the ‘no result’ for a straight out search SFO-BOM, then add screenshots for the SFO-NRT and the NRT-BOM. LM can deny routings but I haven’t experienced that myself. Something like ORD-FRA-ICN-BKK is permissible, so SFO-NRT-BOM should be fine
