Brussels Marriott Grand Place = Tired Hotel but Local Competition is Weak

Introduction I struggled to find a good hotel to book in Brussels and I ended up picking Marriott Grand Place among a group of mediocre hotels from large international chains. Given the lack of hotel competition in Brussels, my moderately negative comments about Marriott below should be taken into consideration along with local alternatives in mind before passing judgment; I am always more tolerant in such conditions than in cities with several great choices. Location First off the main advantage of Marriott is location, the hotel is only a couple of blocks from Grand Place, as per the name of the hotel. Right outside the hotel there were also lots of very nice restaurants so in non-covid times it would be a good spot for dining. Room I booked the entry level room (27 sqm) and upon check-in I received an upgrade to the "junior suite" which is 29 sqm. I told the receptionist that at the risk of sounding ungrateful, most hotels would not call this a suite and that Hilton nearby has standard rooms which start at 30 sqm. Thankfully they further upgraded me to the "premium suite" in light of the conversation. The room was considerably tired, from the ripped door lock to the 1980s style shower door, not to mention that the water temperature in the shower was very unstable, varying from very cold to very hot. Soundproofing was very weak, towards the end of the stay we had neighbors and it made a big difference. On the plus side, for such an old building the ceilings were quite high and there were two windows in the living room and three more in the bedroom so it was bright. Also they might be short changing themselves in the room measurements because the suite felt considerably larger than the listed 40 sqm, there was even a convenient half bath near the entrance. Dining In terms of dining, unfortunately the club lounge was closed and unlike many hotels which offer a decent alternative, they took the easy and lazy way out with 750 points per night and nothing else. Breakfast was fairly standard although they had sparkling wine for a touch of luxury. Service The second strong point besides location was service, for a Marriott brand it was significantly above average in my opinion, they frequently went out of their way to help. For example because we have an unvaccinated baby, given the omicron wave I did not want to eat breakfast in the restaurant, so they provided me with a tray, I could stock up in the buffet and bring food to our suite; staff were kind enough to join me all the way to the elevator door to swipe their card and push my floor number to help, every morning. Service was also very good with multiple printing requests, and the redemption of gift cards was done as requested without hiccups unlike many other hotels which seem unable to do it on a timely basis and requires wasted time after check-out. Wifi Wifi worked well with download speed of 20 Mbps and upload 12 Mbps. Overall While overall my stay was mixed, based on my local observations I do not believe the grass is greener elsewhere. There is no higher brand from Bonvoy in Brussels (perhaps Ren is comparable but there are no luxury hotels), and the best brands from other chains are Sofitel and Hilton which is normally on par with Marriott – Accor and Hilton also do not have luxury hotels in the city. Hyatt has nothing at all, and IHG only has lesser brands. So overall it's slim pickings in this city, not to mention that Marriott was much cheaper than Hilton and Sofitel for my dates so I cannot say value for the money was poor, despite Marriott's warts.
