Kimpton Gray (Chicago)
What is your Rewards Club status?
Spire Elite
Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked 4N, using Chase FN Certs x4 (40k each).
Standard Room, Upgraded to King Spa Corner for 1st night, and 1 BR Suite for the next 3 nights.
How are the rooms?
The hotel had seen better days, aging hardware is slowly catching up.
Rooms are generally dark because day light is easily blocked by neighboring high rises in the financial district.
[If you are Spire and Inner Cricle]
How was your complimentary welcome amenity?
None, apart from 600 welcome bonus points.
Did you raid the minibar? If so, what did you take?
No minibar. But was offered 1 $10 Raid the Bar credit coupon upon check in, and front desk assured us that it is up to $40, since we are staying 4 nights. And the $40 can be used any time within the stay, without daily limit restriction because the Rooftop Bar Boleo was only opened on Wed-Sat, and our favorite restaurant, Steadfast was temporarily closed because of Covid. Fast forward to our last night before checking out, we called front desk to confirm this, but was confronted by a very rude rep, reprimanding me that the credit can be only used $10 per day. We still decided to check out Boleo anyway, and it was a cozy spot for bar snacks and drinks. We did enjoy the food and charged it to the room. Was very surprised that the front desk waived our dining bill in Boleo.
Were you offered a Chef's Taste at Dinner, If so, what did you receive?
Nope
Did you use the free spa credit / did the hotel participate? If so, was it a good value?
No spa credit offered, but I did notice there was in room spa/massage service that was up to $200++ per hour.
What was good and what was bad?
Overall yes, especially these tough times. The hotel staffs are very trying and accommodating. We can see there were plenty of cutbacks, but not to the point where the service suffered.
+ Daily Wine Hour from 5-7 was definitely a plus (heard Kimptons in NYC cut this to once a week)
+ We also love the Daily Tea and Coffee with Treats and Candies every morning
+ Generous Upgrades to returning guests, and we really enjoyed the tub in the King Spa Room and Suite. Excellent water pressure and heat.
+ Very central location, minutes away from State St shopping area and Millennium Park.
- Most F&B still closed.
- Rooms starting to age poorly, chipped edges off the tables and scratched up chairs.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
When we stayed, prices were under $120, and NO AMENITY fees compared to the other hotels in the city. Definitely great value for a city hotel, and will definitely return.
