And after the decision to nightstop was made, there is a real practical difference between (say) half a dozen people on the phone to hotels trying to find a hundred rooms, which could take hours, and a hundred pax each on their device simultaneously booking their own room.

You do not start having a ring-round at the last minute. Either the decision could have been made when the aircraft was on its way to JFK. From everything that I have heard, I think that this had nothing to do with the poor passengers inconveniece and much more to do with BA wanting the aircraft back. What we do not know is whether there had been bad weather and cancellations had filled local hotels already. Either way, I think that it was a very poor show.
