Return flights would originate outside USA and be booked as a one-way (C to A).
So two separate PNRs.
Well, I have booked the trip, but with a twist that makes my original question moot.
Rather than booking two one-ways (actually, was going to be a multi-city outbound, then a one-way return), I booked the whole trip, out-and-back, as a single multi-city itinerary. So, now the "trip" does originate in the USA (because it's all on one booking), so there should be no question about being able to cancel and redeposit with no fee, if we decide to do that.
(Often when I book an award trip, it's not an option to book it as a round-trip or a multi-city trip all the way out and back, in this case it was).
