Wonderful room, friendly staff, terrible breakfast, and water emergency!
What a whirlwind of a stay this has been (and still is)!
First off, this is a beautiful building both on the outside and inside - what a lovely conversion. A bit of an ominous start as I had to wait about two minutes at the front desk with no agent in sight - I rang the little desk bell and just waited. Once the agent did come out, they apologized for the wait - oh, well, everyone has to take breaks. The agent was quite friendly, so good recovery there. No standard suites available online, so I was put in a Corner King on a high floor. They offered an upgrade to a premium suite (probably a loft suite), but it would be $100, which I did not accept.
The Corner King was wonderful with 9 total windows and a great view of Crown Center, the Power & Light District, and the Power & Light building itself. Attractive room design, interesting artwork, a wonderfully plush bed with thick, Thompson-style, linens (but was softer on the mattress side, which I definitely like), and a nice walk-in shower with good pressure. My only complaint was that the couch/loveseat thing at the foot of the bed was a bit short and hard to really relax on.
Per my Globalist profile, I did notice the minibar was not stocked (as it was in other rooms - I'll get to this in a moment), but there also weren't any bottles of water. When I went down that evening, there was another agent who I asked about water, and they said that there should have been some since I was a Globalist. What is interesting is that I don't know how this agent knew I was a Globalist as I didn't give any room information, etc. - guess I just look like a Globalist. The agent and the lobby bartender then went on a big search for water bottles on multiple floors, but couldn't find any. I was told that the ice machines have filtered water dispensers, which was fine with me. Overall, I appreciated the effort.
Breakfast is a $30 credit at the lobby coffee bar, but was honestly pretty terrible. The only savory options were a breakfast burrito (which was gross and inedible) and a pimento cheese bread thing (I don't like pimento cheese). The coffee cake wasn't very good, either. I had to go a few blocks away to Mildred's to get some edible breakfast - annoying.
My departure date got even more interesting when I received a call at 9 AM saying they had to shut the water off in an hour to fix an emergency issue and that it wouldn't be back on until 4 PM. Luckily, I had time to take a shower, but when I asked about the toilet, they told me they could bring up a case of bottled water for me to use for flushing (guess they found the bottled water :-)). They brought up the water, but about 30 minutes later, they called and said I shouldn't flush the toilets. So, the agent brought me up a key that would open 4 different vacant rooms on my floor so that I could use the toilets in there and not flush, as necessary - they would go in and clean all those rooms afterwards. When the agent brought up the key, they also mentioned I would be getting 2500 bonus points for the inconvenience. I will say that the staff does seem to be trying to deal with this the best they can - they said they thought this would be easier for me than moving me to another hotel, which I agree with.
Luckily, I haven't had to use any of those extra toilets, but you know that I already went and toured the other rooms without touching anything - lots of unique layouts here.
Water issue notwithstanding (emergencies happen), I really wish the breakfast was better because everything else (especially the bed) was really nice.
