The agent was wrong, you are correct. "Marketed" means the airline whose code is on the flight, and has nothing to do with which airline issued the ticket. As long as the flight is both operated and marketed by AA (also called an AA prime flight), you can use an SWU to upgrade it.
Interesting. I didn't realise this. To confirm: If I purchase a flight from BA, on AA metal, with an AA flight number, on 125 ticket stock, I can use an SWU/eVIP if the inventory is available?
