Probably been asked before, but here goes...

I have gone back and forth along the SFO route with BA for many years and NEVER been bussed at LHR, either way. This latest trip we were bussed in both directions. (Don't get me started about A10, bussing and social distancing, or lack thereof!) (Going to stand 568 seemed like we were being bussed to Gatwick!)

What determines which flights are bussed and which receive gates? I'm sure there's a gate availability aspect, but it just seems strange with flight levels generally lower than in the past decade or so, that I am bussed both ways on a single trip.
