Recent Sheraton Maui stay report
Did a search and didn't find much new info on the Sheraton Maui at Kaanapali, so I thought I would just add to this thread. My wife and I stayed here on an SVO Nov. 5-10, 2004. ($789, plus $100 hotel credit and Avis $185 rental voucher.) We extended our stay one night and the car rental voucher covered the additional day. We had no problem picking up our car at the Avis rental facility at OGG and extending the extra day. Avis gave us a Chevy Malibu and the only thing we had to pay for was the gas. We arrived at the Sheraton just after 3pm and were given a partial ocean view/garden room, double bed in building 3 on the 4th floor, which overlooked the tennis courts. Didn't care about the view but didn't want the double bed. Asked at the check-in desk if they could move us to a room with a king bed. Was advised that they were sold out that night but could move us the next day. (There was a Veterinarian Conference going on when we arrived.) The Sheraton Maui has a check in at the valet station, first day valet parking is complimentary and is $5 thereafter.
We ate at the hotel restaurant that night. They have a nice salad/dessert bar that comes with the meal. The price was in the mid $20 w/o alcohol for the fish dishes we ordered. The food was good but nothing extraordinary.
The next day we called down to the front desk to let them know our bags were packed and that they could move them anytime. They said to stop by the front desk later in the day to see if our room was ready and to get new keys. No problem since we were headed to the beach.
The Sheraton has the best location next to Black Rock of any of the hotels on Kaanapali. The one negative was the charge to use the lounge chairs on the beach which was $15 for two or you could rent a covered beach cabana for $30 for the day. We stayed at the Princville on Kauai last year and there was no additional charge for the lounge chairs on the beach. Not withstanding that the beach at the Princeville is smaller and more intimate and they actually serve you on the beach. Isn't that what the resort fee is for? Oh well, we took some beach blankets and lounged out by Black Rock and watched the kids diving from the cliff into the ocean. We moved to the pool later in the afternoon and had lunch at the Sundowner bar, which was a pricey $11 for a cheeseburger and no chips or fries included. It was a good burger though. We went to the front desk around 2pm to see if our room was ready and they advised it would be ready by 3pm. We showered at our current room and went back down to the front desk and they had moved our bags and had our room ready. They moved us to building 4 on the second floor overlooking the beach. It was a great room (4211) with a beautiful view of Kaanapli beach. In my opinion rooms from 4x09-4x14 have great views of the beach. I'm sure the higher up you go the better the view. But we enjoyed the convenience of being right near the beach and able to walk from the pool area up one flight of stairs to our room. Each room also has a balcony to sit out on and enjoy the views. If you end up in building 3, better to be in the even numbered rooms as they are ocean facing and again the higher the number the better the view. Building 6 sits up top of black rock and has the best views.
As far as the SVO (Starwood Vacation Offer for those not familiar with the Starwood lingo) was hassle free. We went and saw one of the reps. our second day there and she presented us with our $100 hotel coupons and a box of mac nut chocolates. She soft sold us on doing a time share at the new Westin property going up north of black rock. We said thanks but no thanks and that was that. No pressure, no worries.
As for the property, we thought it was nice but a bit spread out, nothing compared to the Hilton Waikaloa though. The pool is nice but probably not big enough for the number of guests at the hotel. If you were not at the pool by 10:30 am the choices of lounge chairs was small, at least that was our impression. We liked our room. It was faily large, with a nice size bathroom. The staff was very friendly from the valets to the desk, we had no complaints. The fitness center is not on par with what a resort fitness center should be. No free weights and not enough weight machines. I've stayed at Four points with nicer exercise rooms. There was no charge, howerver to use the facility. I'm just SPG Gold but don't think they charge any guest.
Just a tip regarding breakfast. We did eat once at the hotel for breakfast. It's a nice buffet with made to order omlets but at $23 per person, it is pricey. If you go down the road a bit on Kaanapali Pkwy and then make a left on Kekaa drive and go up the hill, there is a mini mall with a deli diner called CJ's. Great food and reasonable prices. (It's on the right hand side, if you see the sign for Maui Eldorado, you've gone too far.) They also do box lunches put into a styrofoam cooler to take to the beach. $10 for a sandwich, drink, chips and a dessert item plus a $5 deposit on the coooler refundable upon return. Highly recommend them both for the lunch and the breakfast.
