The same day change seems to vary from pass to pass, but the $50 seems to be same across many different passes.

That's been the case for Flex passes since at least 2013. Latitude/Business passes do not have any change/cancellation fees.

I made several cancellations/rebookings Dec 17 on one of my two passes (Southwestern sun) while I waffled on the time I wanted to fly. The terms as you stated were in place, but I was not charged a fee to cancel. There is another thread where others have shared the same experience.
That's a temporary COVID policy.
