Edit: MDE with BOG stop works a little cheaper.
Avianca has always been a cheap way of doing Spain-Colombia in J - am unsure if the OP's posted fares are anything but semi-standard. Have not played this route for a few years, but was always fond of the Iberia lounge in Madrid - one of my favorite in the world - great food (if you love good bread and smoked salmon) and awesome view of runway operations

As far as 747jetter's query re creativity, I think there are few options, unless something has changed. I used to be able to snag the "triangle" upon Colombian arrival - ie you would arrive and do MDE-CLO-BOG or a variation of such. It just meant that you managed to add two internal short legs, that were valuable at the time due to Lifemiles earnings. But although decent, AV's product is not stellar, and after the long haul flight I recall every time wishing I had booked direct Have not travelled in Colombia since AV ditched J class on domestic, so this option would be even less attractive.
