Op I’m not really clear what you are actually asking? As you say, you can buy those two separate tickets if you want as long as you are willing to own the risks.
in addition to the usual risks (late plane, timetable change etc), the obvious impact of Covid is that airlines can cancel flights any time so, say, ba could cancel your LHR-YVR and you’d be stuck with the YVR-YYC - or the other way round.
if what you are asking is whether yyc or Yvr is easier I’m not sure but yyc is on the way unlike yvr (and may be a cheaper redemption band?)
