There are two methods of obtaining status which will have different results:
1) Discoverist directly from the credit card.
When you cancel your card, you will
likely lose your discoverist status.
2) Discoverist status from 10 nights
The CC gives 5 free nights. If you have 5 more night credits (through spend, nights stayed, etc) you now have "earned" discoverist status.
Canceling the credit card won't do anything - you keep all of your night credits and will keep your Discoverist status.
