Re-faring one ways vs roundtrips when using discount codes

I have a couple of promotional discount codes. Res said if the fare drops between ticketing and departure they will honor the promotional discount towards the lower fare.

Is it better to book these as two one ways instead of as a roundtrip in case the fare drops for one segment but goes up for the other segment?

Or does Alaska allow you to preserve the price you had on one segment and only re-fare the segment that dropped in price when you make changes to a roundtrip ticket?

I don't need the other code and it will expire soon, anyway.

I'm not well versed in changing tickets at Alaska. On Southwest I *always* book one ways in case the situation above happens.

Appreciate your knowledge! And yes, I could call Res and ask, but better to keep the phone line free for someone who needs a reaccom right now.
