Are you specifically focusing on "told" as in verbally by a flight attendant? In every plane I can recall being on the safety card has shown very clearly where the door goes (out the exit or on the seat). The flight attendants do explicitly talk to the exit row passengers now and make them verbally confirm they know they're in an exit row and are capabile/willing and know what to do, which should involve reading the card for that plane. I know some frequent flyers chafe at even that, and would complain here if the FAs spent more time grilling them, but perhaps a more detailed talk and/or a quiz to make sure people knew how to open that specific exit would be useful, sure.
Regardless of how many times I've flown, I always open the card and note the things that may be specific to that plane -- whether there are lifevests or just cushion flotation, how each of the doors open even if I'm not sitting right next to one, and a glance to count how many rows forward and back to the nearest exits. This 1 minute exercise gives me some peace of mind, but maybe it shouldn't if the guy next to the door is already deciding it's a conspiracy and he's going to do the opposite just to show "them"
