I've sat in exits rows 50+ times and have never had anyone tell me specifically what to do with the door. The instructions are usually very vague.... something like, "we need you to assist in an emergency". Wonder if it's airline specific? I mainly fly Alaska but sometimes Delta or Southwest.
The information on what to do with the exit door is on the safety information card and the placards on the exit. The crew, and safety briefing, told you to review the safety card.
