AmEx has shifted more towards spending-based retention offers. The notable exception is the $150 statement credit on the personal Platinum that's been going around recently, which reminds me of the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit after its annual fee was also raised. The omicron surge could lead to better retention offers with either no or lower spending requirements. They touted their new non-travel benefits (Walmart+, Equinox, and Digital Entertainment credits) when I brought up COVID but I can't imagine they seriously think they're convincing anyone to stay with those options. I decided not to wait to see if I could get a better offer on my Platinum because I'm already keeping track of two spending-based bonuses.
For the Platinum the retention offers were only 11 month apart - I always assumed there needed to be 13 month between offers
