Compensation for involunatary seat reassignment?

Greetings,
Monday before Thanksgiving about 5 minutes before boarding, I was informed by the gate agent that my seat (last row, window booked ~9 months in advance - my preferred cattle class seat, believe it or not) was being changed to an aisle seat 3 rows up. I probably would have been fine with it had I been asked but I did not appreciate the manner in which it was forced upon me. I asked an AA agent on a subsequent flight if this were common and was told they would never force someone to change seats unless it was a safety or medical issue. Furthermore, since this was a "saver" ticket my only option to change seats myself would have been to purchase a premium econ seat to the tune of ~$160.

If I have to pay to change seats, then why does AS not have to pay me to move me without asking?

Cheers

Jon
