Why don't rental companies photograph cars when they are checked out?
Why don't rental car companies photograph rental cars as they are checked out and checked back in. We have OCR technology that can read license plates. High resolution cameras and data storage space seem cheap to me. Would it be all that difficult to set up a system that takes high resolution photos of every vehicle as it is driven in and out of the rental area and then stores it in a database indexed by time/date and license number?
My gut feeling is that rental companies make a lot of money off damage claims and that making the claim resolution process more accurate would not be worth it.
