In your case you had enough time to to to the ticket window in a station where long queues are rare. But if this happens in eg. Paris Nord where the queues can be very long than do not miss yet another train. Just board the next train and arrange it with the conductor.
It is good to know your rights as a train passenger. If you miss a train due to a fault of the railway you are entitled to take the next available train. The only issue you can run in to is where there are two operators involved, and there is no agreement between them. These situations are rare however.
