You can cancel any time up until flight departure (although I wouldn't leave it until literally the last minute in case of long hold times etc.)
You can also contact DL (phone/Twitter/SMS) and tell them you can't take the flight but would prefer to take an eCredit instead of a refund and they should be able do that too.
