Test & Go
Just completed a Test & Go night here and then a regular two-night stay. Although T&G new approvals have been suspended at least until early January, if you were grandfathered or arrive after the schedule resumption date, this post is for you. There are quite a few "official" lists of T&G hotels out there, and the GH Erawan doesn't appear on most of them, but it is definitely in the program. You can book the T&G night (has to be a one-night initial reservation independent of any other subsequent nights you might stay) directly on the Hyatt website, which provides all the details and rates. This is superior to most other hotels, which advise you to "email the hotel to find about our Test & Go program and rates". One less hassle.
I'd considered two other Hyatt options. The Hyatt Place is a popular T&G option (as I understand it, it is 100% quarantine and there are no other guests), and is a bit cheaper than the GH; it also includes three meals. The Park Hyatt is more than twice the cost of the GH. I ended up picking the GH for several reasons: (1) my flight arrived at night and test results were due within 12 hours of the test, so I didn't need meals beyond breakfast, and the GH breakfast is 1,000 times better than the HP offering; (2) in case of a delay in test results, I wanted a room where I could happily move around for an extended period, as you cannot leave for any reason and aren't even issued a room key)--I didn't even take chances with an upgrade, the suite at the GH cost just under twice as much as the room at the HP and half as much as the base room at the PH; (3) the Park Hyatt's facilities were not a factor, because I couldn't use the pool, fitness center, restaurants, etc during most of the stay, so paying so much more for the property just didn't pencil; and (4) the GH and PH pick you up from the airport in a private car and take you directly to a hospital for testing, which I preferred to the HP's group shuttle and a single site nurse doing tests (and, from reports by others, not loving her job) that take longer to get results. The GH was the perfect balance between room/healthcare/food quality and price. But I've heard mostly good reports from the HP, too; if you want to save a few bucks and can just sleep through your half-day quarantine, it seems like a solid choice. I want to try the PH someday as it is one of my favorite brands, but their T&G rate is just way too disproportionate to what the hotel can offer when you're literally locked in your room. Thought about booking my post-T&G stay there, but decided I didn't want to pack up and move and didn't want to risk something going wrong with a delayed test result making a move impossible.
The entire T&G process was smooth, efficient, and stress-free. The logistics involved, and the constant regulatory changes, must be an enormous challenge (and cost), but the GH handled them superbly. The hotel rep was right outside baggage claim. I was in the car solo four minutes later, at the hospital for a test that took maybe three minutes, and escorted directly from the car into my suite (no stop at the front desk). Asleep in about an hour after I walked out of baggage claim. Strict COVID protocols observed everywhere.
In the morning, I ordered breakfast via room service, wistful that I wouldn't get my beloved Asian breakfast buffet on day one. I ordered whatever I wanted (breakfast is included in the rate) without limit. Honestly, it was even better than the buffet, which I did enjoy on the two subsequent days. And in a totally different class from the pictures I've seen of the serviceable but forgettable breakfast at the HP.
Then I got some work done, took a nap, played a game, and boom...at noon the front desk called to report that my test result had arrived--negative. Four minutes later, they dropped off my room key. So I hit the pool, walked the streets of Bangkok, did a workout in the fitness center, and got on with my trip.
Under T&G, the GH had one job. It did it, and it did it very well.
