I think the point of the story is that Hilton still doesn't have its act together on making sure that those who book "connecting rooms" for family management purposes get connecting rooms. The Hilton CEO was very clear that his own wife and him would have loved to have this kind of "be certain to get connecting rooms" thing back when his children were younger.
We have all had poor customer delivery. If they got their points back on the HGI and were able to use the room they forgot to cancel (which would have been loss of points or money) plus they got 60k or 90k points the poster should not be complaining. I would be saying "thank god my not canceling a reservation got saved by the fact the second hotel let me cancel with no fee"

Just my opinion....

And WAY off topic a college age child not staying alone..... I hope the parents really don't know what happens with college age people!
