Why are you assuming you were charged? I've had my card preauthorized for the rental amount (or sometimes +$100) on the day of the rental, it should just drop off in a few days if you never picked up the car.

On your Amex account online you can open up a pending charge and have it email you an alert if and when the charge actually posts. I do this whenever anything odd pops up as "pending" -- 99.9% of the time, the preauth just falls off.
