I had a wonderful one-night staycation at the Park Hyatt Auckland just before Christmas. I booked using a Hyatt Privé rate which came with a range of excellent benefits making the stay seem like a bargain!
The Park Hyatt is undoubtedly the best hotel in Auckland at the moment. It is an architectural triumph – the somewhat low-key exterior of the building gives way to spectacular (though in no way showy or glitzy) interiors as soon as you enter the atrium style lobby. The minimalist designs combine warmth, serenity and calmness with a soothing feeling pervading the entire hotel. New Zealand art works are scattered throughout the hotel and are often tucked away in nooks and crannies you would not expect, while the criss-crossing of corridors around the atrium offers many unexpected and delightful vistas of the interiors.
I stayed in a harbour view room with balcony which was spacious, stylish and offered spectacular views of the harbour and the city skyline. Definitely upgrade to a harbour view room if you can. You do need to take a few minutes to work out the touch screens that control everything in the room but having done so you really do have everything at your fingertips! It was also refreshing to note that the room was largely devoid of self-promotional hotel clutter, with only a simple card of QR codes to lead you to hotel information. The only negative with the room was that a number of surfaces were marked with the rings from glasses and bottles. This was particularly noticeable on the table on the balcony.
Dinner at Onemata is strongly recommended (and you should book) - the food was a feast for the eyes (think Instagram!) and truly delicious with friendly but professional staff always on hand. The Captain's Bar was a great spot for a nightcap while enjoying the lights of the city. The Living Room offers light meals all day plus afternoon tea, and service and food quality were again excellent. Food and drink prices are in line with other local restaurants which no doubt accounts for the fact that the Park Hyatt’s F&B outlets seemed to be popular with locals looking for a stylish venue with a view.
The heated infinity pool and the spacious and well-equipped gym are great leisure options. I didn't try the Spa.
A truly outstanding hotel. Not to be missed.
