If you have a non-refundable, non-changeable ticket, it is exactly that. BA does NOT do standby for earlier flights like US carriers do. That is for tickets in the N, V, R, M and K fare classes. If you have a H or B fare, then you can change it for the difference in fare, plus a £30 fee. If you're on a full Y ticket, that's fully flexible.
