I have only ever been MVP, but thanks to the EQM bonus this year and also the offer a few months ago to earn EQM via Alaska Visa spend, I made MVP Gold for the first time after my last flight of the year earlier this week. I am a leisure traveler and virtually never travel by myself, so I'm interesting in understanding how best to secure an upgrade for both myself (as a newly-minted MVP Gold) and my companion (who will typically be either MVP Gold as well or a non-elite).
Sorry if some of the following points are kind of basic, but up to now, I've never had a need to familiarize myself with the ins and outs of MVP Gold. I've reviewed the Alaska website and also a bunch of relevant FT threads, but wanted to confirm my understanding as well as get some clarification regarding GGU usage.
1) If my companion and I are booked into M, L, V, S, N, Q, O, or G, then we'll both be eligible for an upgrade to F 72 hours prior to departure if there is 2U available. This would be regardless of whether my companion is MVP Gold or non-elite and regardless of whether or not I used an Alaska Visa companion cert when purchasing the tickets. Is my understanding correct?
2) If my companion and I are booked into Y, B, H, or K, then we'll both be eligible for an instant upgrade to F if there is 2U available at the time of booking. And again, this would be regardless of whether my companion is MVP Gold or non-elite and regardless of whether or not I used an Alaska Visa companion cert when purchasing the tickets. Is that correct?
3) If my companion and I are booked into M, L, V, S, or N and there is 2U available at the time of booking, then shortly after booking, I can look up my reservation online (or call in, I suppose) and apply a GGU to it in order to upgrade myself to F. But what about my companion? Will they be auto-upgraded to F along with me just like in #1 and #2 above? From what I've read, it sounds like for this case, my companion wouldn't be auto-upgraded along with me and I would need to use a second GGU to upgrade my companion as well. And what, if any, impact would there be if I used a companion cert when purchasing the tickets?
