IME MSP-Duluth is about a three hour drive, and Hibbing is an additional hour or two beyond Duluth, even without winter driving challenges. I would assume that the drive will require more than three hours.
You should try to get a good map (AAA? the free ones from MN welcome centers? IIRC there's a welcome center signposted from I-35 just south of Duluth that gives lots of free tourist information when it's open and probably maps and other basics when it's officially closed) that clearly indicates dirt roads, There's a wonderful fun but somewhat challenging one (even in summer) that goes straight south to Two Harbors. If you're trying to avoid dirt roads, you don;'t want to get stuck somewhere with no reasonable alternative.
BTW, I recommend the International Wolf Center (museum and indoor wolf viewing places), IIRC in Ely, if you have time. With luck, there will be a couple wolves just on the other side of a plexi-glasss window from you. There's also a bear center in the area, but I've never been there. The Duluth Zoo is also fun for its local animals.
