With all of the turmoil in the airline industry right now, I think shared contract-type lounges in smaller, non-hub city airports is really a great idea, and would perhaps stem some of the bleeding of pax to LCC's.
The last time I flew in/out of MHT (a couple of years ago), they had a shared club for anyone who had elite status with any airline. It was similar to the US clubs, but didn't have the excellent staff we all know and love. Still, it was nice to have a quiet place to go, get a cup of coffee and have a place to plug in a laptop and check email or make a call.
