As AS and AC uses different departure control systems and you are travelling on separate tickets, it is possible that AS did not send AC the proper EDIFACT message about your bag.
AC needs to have the tag number in their system in order for them to accept the incoming bags from AS. Otherwise by default they get refused.
As a general rule, whenever you are travelling on separate itineraries across different airlines, the onus is on your to let the next carrier know/confirm that you have a bag checked through from another carrier.
Ah, good advice. No, I didn't give the AC gate agent at ATL my bag tags to verify that the bags had been properly released and forwarded to AC. I will keep that in mind for my return trip. Thanks!

I charged this trip to my Alaska Visa back in September when they had the EQM bonus running. As far as I know, that doesn't include delayed baggage compensation, but please correct me if I'm mistaken.
