It is not for us to decide which rules should be followed and which can be ignored because they do not suit us. You do that at the ballot box and not in the witness stand. This incident would annoy me as it did the OP. I would have asked to speak to the IFL and if it was the IFL was the parent or they did not deal with my complaint to my satisfaction, would have escalated this to the captain.
Covid is not a joke as more than 5 million people are now dead. It does not matter what you think - the rules are the rules. If you don't like them, change them. Don't make excuses up for people who just think they don't apply to them.
Yours is a simplistic argument that will appeal to individuals who place a lot of faith in the actions of various governments over the last couple of years. I can't speak to the actions of the UK Government, but can certainly address what has been going on in the USA. The public health establishment in the US has destroyed whatever credibility it may have had in the past, and at least half of the population doesn't believe anything that they say, especially if these people are in high places working for the current US government.
You are right that the appropriate long term solution is to vote these politicians out of office, and to fire the people that they have put into these positions. This will come with time, however there is a role for civil disobedience in a democracy when elected officials betray the public trust.
