We avoid the Hotel Zone in Cancun like the plague. We go to a smaller resort in Porto Morelos. I did see a Mexican military helicopter flying over one day which was a first and there were a few uniformed military at the airport but that is about it.

This was our 8th trip to Cancun and we have never had a single safety issue.
