Another problem: the system would not accept my wife's passport info because somehow United has added a letter to her first name in its records and her passport therefore doesn't match.
Hope to sort all this out at the airport today.
For whatever reason, United did not let me check-in online/via app for any ex-US flights to Europe. They always wanted to check the docs in-person prior to departure before issuing boarding passes. Not so ex-LHR/EU - could get them in App. So even if you resolve the passport thing, I am not sure you will get your boarding passes anyway.
