I would go to the gate about 50 mins before departure, add yourself to standby list, and tell the GA not to clear you unless it's into first/business. Regardless of the actual rule the GA will be the one to control the list. 50mins important because when the 45min checkin cutoff hits they may process more upgrades. I don't know if voluntary standby has preference over upgrades
