AC sets the min connection times and feels they can connect you in those times. As you say, they made the call on what was more important and in my view should have to bear the consequences so write in and explain in a concise manner. Do also look to see if you have insurance as that may get you cash more readily.

Do you have travel insurance, perhaps through your credit card? It would likely reimburse your accomodation and meal expenses in this situation.
