You have to be careful when booking from UA's HK site. You won't have problems in terms of upgrading or so through UA's reservation in the US, but UA HK used to have a rule that every purchase over HKD 10,000 ~ USD 1285 has to go through a process of credit card verification. They basically fax you a form, and you have to fax back the materials, and the fax number is Hong Kong phone number. I don't know whether this rule still exist today. It was there when I booked with them 2 years ago.
