1. Booked four tickets on United to Austin for my family. I chose four seats for us in coach.
2. After checking out, I was offered an upgrade on a pop-up screen for all of us to be in first class on the way there for $750. I purchased it! You only live once, right?
3. Three of us were automatically assigned to seats in different rows in first class. The fourth person (youngest) was not unassigned anywhere. I couldn't change any seats, like putting myself in coach and the rest of the family in first.
4. I called United and they refunded my $750. However, they were not able to reassign me any seats in coach because the flight is "sold out." The seating chart still shows three of us in first class and one unassigned.

What's my best option to get us seats? I keep checking each day to see if any seats have opened up. Does the airline release seats a certain amount of days before departure? That could be my best bet. Seems like we are kinda trapped in a purgatory between first and coach with no place to sit

Maybe we won't find out until checking in?

Thank you for any help and suggestions!
Missing a detail here. What do you mean you were refunded the $750? Why did they refund you rather than assign you seats? If they oversold the F cabin you should have waited until departure for big $$$ in an involuntary downgrade (also I don’t believe UA oversells F (J) anymore)
