Hampton Inn breakfasts, while not amazing, are relatively predictable and of reasonable variety and quality. They do not require one to get in their car to go somewhere. You can always find a protein, a fruit, and a carb... and most importantly, free coffee. My habit is to throw on some clothes (no... I don't wander down in my PJs) and a hat and go get breakfast before I do anything else. Many business travelers are generally expected to stay in breakfast-included hotels. I would stay in HGIs when the cost was relatively comparable to an HI, but that is really no longer an option for me unless dictated by location.
If I just want something to eat, Hampton is fine. If I want something tasty that isn't carb/sugar filled, I would go to a real restaurant, even if it cost me a couple of bucks over my credit. YMMV.
