A fool I know at State who does consular services denied a woman a visa to the US because he said her passport expires within 6 months. Her passport most certainly was good for 9 months and then some.

6 month validity is one semi-asinine rule I know about. There is also the 6-page rule (6 blank pages in your passport) in certain cases.
