I now have several emails from AA stating that "You have successfully submitted your refund request." I get the same thing when I click on "Manage your trip" on any of the emails I received with an itinerary, e.g. (cut and pasted in with itinerary number obfuscated):

This would seem to indicate that AA knows that the trip was canceled and that a refund request has been submitted. We are now 8 days out; just noticed that they say "business days," so I might be 1 day short on the 7 business days.
Do you still see a call to reservations as being useful?
