I've had trouble convincing people that they may be denied entry into countries if they don't have sufficient time before their passport expires. They seem quite adamant that if their passport is valid, they cannot be denied entry.

I don't know whether airlines routinely check passport expirations, but wouldn't the airline be responsible for returning the passenger to their point of origin if the passenger was refused entry into a country?
